A young mother sits in her Beijing apartment. Her little boy plays quietly nearby, too young to be aware of the tragedy that is unfolding in the family. His father has been taken into custody. What was his crime? Something that we here in the West take almost totally for granted: practicing his faith.
In modern China under the rule of the Communist Party, this scene is all too common, as families try their best to cope with fathers and mothers, sons, daughters, and other loved ones being sent to labor camps and prisons, and even tortured to death for their belief.
Beijing Lullaby
Look at you, my precious little son
How sweetly you sit there at play
You're too young to know why I'm crying
The police took your Daddy away.
Everyone knows he's a good man
He didn't do anything wrong
The Party jailed him for one reason
Believing in Falun Gong.
Are you cold, my precious little son
Last night they turned off the heat
We might have to stay at your grandma's
Or else we'll be out on the street.
The Party's an evil red dragon
It claims to be “glorious and great”
But we know the power of Compassion
Surpasses the power of hate.
Come to me, my precious little son
I just want to hold you a while
We must not lose heart or be fearful
Now show me your Daddy's bright smile.
These dark days will soon be behind us
The sun will shine after the rain
The Party will face Heaven's justice
And we'll be together again.
Look at you, my precious little son
How sweetly you sit there at play
You're too young to know why I'm crying
The police took your Daddy away.
